Weekend Errand Leads Remote Worker To Unexpected Discovery: The Beach
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC — Local resident Jessica Morton, who has worked from home since relocating to Hilton Head in 2021, was shocked Saturday to discover the island has beaches after accidentally driving east during a weekend grocery run.
“I just thought Hilton Head was cul-de-sacs, Publix, and spotty Wi-Fi,” Morton said, describing her reaction upon seeing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time since moving. “I always figured the palm tree logos everywhere were just a marketing gimmick — I didn’t realize they were pointing to an actual beach.”
Neighbors confirmed Morton rarely leaves her house Monday through Friday, sustaining herself on Instacart deliveries and back-to-back Zoom meetings. “She once went three straight weeks without moving her car,” said fellow resident Frank Drayton. “We thought she might just be working out of a stock photo.”
Morton said her Apple Maps app kept showing blue space nearby, but she assumed it was a glitch.
At press time, Morton was reportedly planning to visit the ocean again next weekend, pending whether her Slack notifications allowed it.
