Island Woman Asks If Loud Noises Are Fireworks Or War, Thread Reaches 300 Comments
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC — A simple Nextdoor post asking whether a series of loud bangs were fireworks or “possibly some kind of military action” quickly spiraled into a 300-comment thread Tuesday night.
“I just wanted to know if I should let the dog out,” said poster Linda Carver, who uploaded her question to the app’s Crime & Safety category at 9:14 p.m. “Next thing I knew, people were arguing about Vietnam.”
Residents confirmed the thread included at least four competing explanations, ranging from construction on Pope Avenue to an invasion from Bluffton. Several neighbors insisted the noise was “clearly coming from Parris Island,” while one commenter linked to a YouTube video titled Proof Hilton Head Is A Test Site For Secret Rockets.
By the 200th comment, the discussion had shifted into a heated debate over recycling bins, with one user threatening to report another to the HOA.
At press time, officials confirmed the noises were, in fact, fireworks — launched as they every Tuesday all summer long at Shelter Cove.
